Android applications I use
Long time no post, I know. I've been busy otherwise, and haven't felt very inspired as of lately.
As you know from previous posts I've switched to Nexus Android devices for my mobile needs. I'm still as happy with them as on day one. Both Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 do exactly what I need and more. This post is to give you an idea which apps I'm using on them regularly.
- Web browser: Google Chrome Beta
Why the beta? It is much faster than the current stable version. An added benefit is the integration between Chrome on Android and Chrome on the desktop - bookmarks, history, settings are easily synced across devices. I've given other browsers like Firefox or Dolphin a try, but neither convinced me. - Email client: Gmail
A no-brainer given that Gmail has been my email service of choice since 2004. - Calendar: Google Calendar
- Maps: Google Maps
- Messaging:
- WhatsApp - the holo-themed beta from the WhatsApp website to be precise.
- Viber
- Skype
- Google Talk (part of the OS)
- IRC: AndChat
A nifty little IRC client. I chose to buy the donate version because a) I use the app almost constantly and b) I know its developer from Neowin IRC and figured it'd be fair to support him. - News: Google Currents
- Social media:
- Productivity: Google Drive
- Cloud storage:
- Google Drive
- Box
Hint for Nexus 4 owners: You can get 50 GB of storage on Box simply by logging in, thanks to a partnership between Box and LG (who make the Nexus 4). - Media players: Google Play Music and Google Play Movies
- E-book reader:
- Games:
All of these apps work well on both phone and tablet. Neither of them is as sluggish or ugly as iOS proponents like to suggest. The 'Android apps suck!' myth can and should be deep-sixed.
